Solving Time: Started this off in fine form and had the whole bottom half done in no time, but really struggled in the NW, and took almost 20 minutes to finish in the end. Some very nice clues though - I did particularly like 14ac

cd = cryptic definition, dd = double definition, rev = reversed, anagrams are *(--), homophones indicated in ""

ODO means the Oxford Dictionaries Online

Across
1shot putter - SHOT (effort) + PUTTER (club). And not an anagram of club + effort as I thought for far too long
7late - dd. Reminds me of Slartibartfast, in the HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy: "We must go, or we shall be late." "Late? Late for what?" "Late, as in the late Arthur Dent..."
9unsettle - *(NUT + STEEL). The anagrind being screws, and not throw as I first thought. I actually wrote in "lunettes," for no terribly good reason, and then had to correct it
10piquet - sounds like P, K
11morose - MO (doctor) ROSE
13tropical - R(ight) in TOPICAL (hot off the press)
14heterosexual - *(EXHAUSTE(d) + ROLE). The def. being "straight." Tricky clue!
17whats-her-name - *(WHETHER MAN AS)
20milepost - EP (record) in LO (look), all in MIST (film). Do they still make EPs? I have a number of Beatles ones, somewhere
21unholy - a dd I suppose, unholy = no holes = watertight being one.
22scampi - CAMP (affected) in S(ome) I(nedible). That pub staple that ought to be delicious but so seldom is
23Rabelais - ABEL (first murdered man) in RAIS(e)
25arid - (wate)R in AID (help)
26second hand - another dd

Down
2hangover - G(atecrashers) in HANOVER, another clue that caused problems through failure to spot what sort of house we were looking for here
3toe - TO + (wardrob)E
4untie - (a)UNTIE
5trestle - REST (remainder) in T(a)LE
6reproduce - this took me time to parse. It is PRO (supporting) in REDUCE, (drop)
7liquid lunch - LI (51) QUID LUNCH, a quid being an informal term for the pound sterling
8Theban - BA (Bachelor of Arts, a degree) in THEN (next)
12overwhelmed - *(HOWEVER) + M(arkers) in LED (was ahead)
15oratories - (m)ORA(l) + TORIES (politicians)
16emulsion - EMU (bird) + (feather)S in LION (cat)
18satyric - *(IS CARY (Gran)T). Neat clue!
19pincer - IN + CE (church) in P(ushchai)R
21urban - dd. I always did think that a rather peculiar name for a pope
24lah - hidden in shrilL A High. Where Mary Poppins finally ran out of ideas, Lah being just "A note to follow Soh"
